Vaught-Hemingway Stadium History

Here’s the official Vaught-Hemingway Stadium history:

Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, located on the University of Mississippi campus in Oxford, Mississippi, is the home of Ole Miss Rebels football and the largest stadium in the Magnolia state.

Originally built in 1915 as “Hemingway Stadium” with a capacity of 24,000, it underwent major expansions and renovations – most notably in 1988, 2002, 2016, and 2023 – growing to its current official capacity of 64,038 (making it the largest sports largest venue in Mississippi and one of the biggest on-campus stadiums in the SEC).

Named in 1982 after legendary judge and university benefactor William Hemingway and later honoring Hall of Fame coach Johnny Vaught (the winningest coach in school history), the stadium is renowned for its passionate game-day atmosphere, iconic “Walk of Champions” through The Grove, and its distinctive design that places fans close to the action. Often called the loudest stadium in college football and regularly ranking among the SEC’s toughest road environments, Vaught-Hemingway has hosted numerous record crowds and memorable Rebels victories while continuing to evolve with modern amenities.
